Nursing Diagnosis:

Readiness for Learning: Identify the factors that would indicate the readiness to learn for the target aggregate. Include emotional and experiential readiness to learn.

Goal: Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) objective(s) utilized as the goal for the teaching. Include the appropriate objective number and rationale for using the selected HP2020 objective (use at least one objective from one of the 24 focus areas). If an HP2020 objective does not support your teaching, explain how your teaching applies to one of the two overarching HP2020 goals.

Prevention of Cigarette Smoking and Other Tobacco Products among Adolescents

Name and Credentials of Teacher: A. B., RN
Estimated Time Teaching Will Last:

1 hour

Location of Teaching:

High School in a rural setting

Supplies, Material, Equipment Needed:

DVD, pens, chalk, cigarettes, tobacco products adverts, Laptop Overhead Screen.

Estimated Cost:

$

Community and Target Aggregate:

Adolescents in Grade 9 and 10

Topic: Prevention of cigarette smoking and other tobacco products

Identification of Focus for Community Teaching

Studies in healthcare promotion and primary prevention indicate that cigarette smoking and the use of other tobacco related products exposes the user to a number of diseases and health conditions which include but are not limited to cancers of the lung, mouth, throat together with respiratory infections. Diabetes and coronary heart disease are also included (Harvey & Chad, 2016). There is need to focus on preteens and teenagers because early access to tobacco is believed to greatly contribute to these children being initiated to smoking because of their smoking parents and parental dependence on nicotine.

Epidemiological Rationale of the Community Teaching Work Plan Proposal Example

Through primary prevention and health promotion practices programs, social determinants of health are introduced early enough. Effective communication, education on the dangers posed by cigarette smoking, and policy changes play a key role in this prevention as well as health promotion strategies.  Tezera & Endalamaw (2019), report that by 2020, the number of deaths due to tobacco use could increase by a million annually representing 10 % of all the global deaths.

Teaching Plan Criteria in the Community Teaching Work Plan Proposal Example

The criteria for the teaching plan will involve having group and class discussions on the causes of why teenagers get initiated to cigarette smoking, how to overcome this temptation amongst other aspects like signs and symptoms of tobacco-related diseases.

Community Teaching Work Plan Proposal Example Nursing Diagnosis:

There is a direct link between insufficient knowledge on the dangers of cigarette smoking as evidenced by the number of adolescents who start smoking during their school life.

Community Teaching Work Plan Proposal Example Readiness for Learning:

Teacher to identify readiness for learning factors like whether cigarette smoking has nutritional value and if not why people still smoke.  The teenagers also to express their feelings (like or dislike for smokers/ smoking. They could recount past experiences.

Learning Theory to Be Utilized:

The theory of Social Development as advanced by Vygotsky will be used. This is because it argues that social interaction precedes cognition and consciousness which greatly impact on social behavior and the process of socialization (Aho, 2019).

Goal: Healthy People 2020 (HP2020) objective(s) utilized as the goal for the teaching.

Objective TU-3.1 to 3.4 endeavors to reduce the number of school-age children being initiated to cigarette smoking, use of smokeless tobacco, and e-smoking. These HP 2020 objectives are in line with those of my Alma Ata’s Global initiatives as it targets to prevent and control chronic diseases. Community Teaching Work Plan Proposal Example

3. Learners to study the global disease burden linked to cigarette smoking, prevention strategies.

3.Go through the most recent statistics on treatment costs, effective control and management  and prevention measures 3.  Control and prevention measures.
4. Learners to study importance of engaging in recreation and physical exercises. 4. Name favorite sports, physical activities they engage in and health benefits. 4. Diagrams and pictures explaining the role of sports in children.

Creativity: How was creativity applied in the teaching methods/strategies?

Creative activities will include uniqueness, fluency and flexibility to improve the nurse’s cognitive capacity in future clinical practice to assist in primary prevention of diseases and health promotion (Xu, 2016).

Planned Evaluation of Objectives; Describe what you will measure for each objective and how.

  1. Increased peer education where the teenagers share information in small groups by a peer matched through risky behavior.

The objective’s achievement will be measured on the number of teenage initiation smoking falls within 2 years in the selected learning institution.

  1. Media advocacy to frame the smoking prevention and cessation using the Media as a platform.

The objective achievement will be measured by the policy changers effected during the project dubbed Project Tobacco Use Reduction Using Effective Measures and Teamwork. Participants to be rewarded with positive media coverage while those not complying will be named and shamed.

  1. Social Marketing describes the systematic application of marketing to develop, disseminate and deliver value so as to influence the target audience to achieve particular behavioral goals for social good.(Chauhan & Setia, 2016).

The objective achievement will be measured using the number of teen smokers who stopped smoking within the 2 year period and the reduction in the sale of cigarettes.

  1. Community mobilization with the aim of initiating a change in normal social functions from the various educational interventions.

The achievement of this objective will be realized by evaluating the outcomes in community interventions targeting the reduction of the prevalence of cigarette smoking within the community in which the schools are located.

Planned Evaluation of Goal:

The teaching plan will be evaluated through an interview with the school nurse and school counselor at the end of the semester.

Planned Evaluation of Lesson and Teacher

The learners will answer anonymously a given questionnaire meant to evaluate the lesson and the teacher at the end of the lesson.

Barriers:

Some of the barriers which I anticipate may arise as the lesson progresses include lack of paying attention, shyness, and language barrier. To address them, I will lay engagement rules at the start of the lesson, use varied and creative teaching methods to ensure attention, and use basic terms at a slow rate.

Therapeutic Communication

Informed the findings of Coe et al. (2014), to introduce the teaching work plan, I will kick off through a demonstration on how some children are exposed to cigarette smoking within the home setting, then ask the learners to identify some of the reasons why people smoke and how to avoid falling into this trap. The main content will be identifying the fault /misconception on cigarette smoking, debunking the myth then giving concise facts on the harmful effects of tobacco products on the user’s health. To conclude, I will stress the importance of participating in sports or hobbies and how these simple cost-effective, and apt time management help one to stop smoking and to the non-smokers never engage in smoking.
