Assignment: Syphilis Microbiology Presentation

Description

Scenario is: A 35 year old man comes to the free clinic where you are working with a red rash on the palms of his hands and the bottoms of his feet. He says that he has had a fever for a couple of days, and is exhibiting swollen lymph glands, aching muscles and fatigue. When asked about his medical history, he indicated that he had not had any recent illnesses. What is the disease? (I have already analyzed and found out the disease- it is Syphilis).(Syphilis Microbiology Presentation)

Once you have correctly identified the disease, you may proceed with the remainder of the project. You will have a maximum of 10 minutes to present the following information in a PowerPoint presentation:

• disease name (including correct pronunciation…if you don’t know, look it up!), and analysis of the scenario (how/why did you decide that this was the disease?)

• etiologic agent (including correct pronunciation of the name of the agent), and its general characteristics

• key tests for isolation and identification of this organism (be specific for this microbe!); how would you isolate and identify this organism in the laboratory? What specific tests would you have to do on a person to determine that this etiologic agent was present?(Syphilis Microbiology Presentation)

• means of transmission and usual disease reservoirs

• historical information to include when and who isolated the microbe and any significance of its name

• signs and symptoms of the disease; body system(s) usually affected

• microbial virulence mechanisms contributing to the disease process

• control & treatment for the disease

• prevention, including current research about a vaccine or other means of control/prevention

• Current local and global outbreaks (with incidence); what is the incidence of this disease in San Diego county/southern California, the US, and globally(Syphilis Microbiology Presentation)

symptoms of syphilis vary depending in which of the four stages it presents (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary).[1] The primary stage classically presents with a single chancre (a firm, painless, non-itchy skin ulceration usually between 1 cm and 2 cm in diameter) though there may be multiple sores.[1] In secondary syphilis, a diffuse rash occurs, which frequently involves the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.[1] There may also be sores in the mouth or vagina.[1] In latent syphilis, which can last for years, there are few or no symptoms.[1] In tertiary syphilis, there are gummas (soft, non-cancerous growths), neurological problems, or heart symptoms.[2] Syphilis has been known as “the great imitator” as it may cause symptoms similar to many other diseases.[1][2]

Syphilis is most commonly spread through sexual activity.[1] It may also be transmitted from mother to baby during pregnancy or at birth, resulting in congenital syphilis.[1][6] Other diseases caused by Treponema bacteria include yaws (T. pallidum subspecies pertenue), pinta (T. carateum), and nonvenereal endemic syphilis (T. pallidum subspecies endemicum).[2] These three diseases are not typically sexually transmitted.[7] Diagnosis is usually made by using blood tests; the bacteria can also be detected using dark field microscopy.[1] The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (U.S.) recommend all pregnant women be tested.[1]

The risk of sexual transmission of syphilis can be reduced by using a latex or polyurethane condom.[1] Syphilis can be effectively treated with antibiotics.[3] The preferred antibiotic for most cases is benzathine benzylpenicillin injected into a muscle.[3] In those who have a severe penicillin allergy, doxycycline or tetracycline may be used.[3] In those with neurosyphilis, intravenous benzylpenicillin or ceftriaxone is recommended.[3] During treatment people may develop fever, headache, and muscle pains, a reaction known as Jarisch–Herxheimer
