Part 2: The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act
The enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act or simply PPACA in 2010 was an epochal moment as it helped break the logjam that had for a long time curtailed the US national progress in the achievement of equitable, quality, universal, and affordable healthcare in this nation. Since then, it has survived countless challenges ranging from fractious road in its legislation process, a Supreme Court case and over 30 votes for its repeal in Congress. Healthcare experts and political leaders alike admit it has benefits and its fair share of limitations even as the public understating remains poor while opposition continues a decade later(McIntyre & Song, 2019). As such, this essay aims at offering a brief overview of PPACA, its implications for public health and the impact elimination of copays and deductibles is bound to have women who have mammograms yearly.(The Patient Protection and Affordable Act of 2010) A Brief Overview of PPACA The PPACA consists of ten distinct legislative Titles making act have several major aims. The first of these aims is to achieve a near universal coverage by sharing responsibility among the government, individuals, and employers. The second aim is to ensure health insurance coverage is enhanced through fairness, affordability, and quality while the third aim is to improve the value, quality and efficiency of healthcare value (Gaffeney & McCormick, 2017). Additionally there will be reduced wasteful spending with the healthcare systems becoming more accountable to a patient population that continues to increase in diversity. The fourth aim is to strengthen access to primarily healthcare with the fifth and last of these aims being to make strategic investments in the public’s health by expanding clinical preventive care investments at the community level. The Implications of the PPACA for Public Health At its full implementation, the PPACA will have a positive impact in promotion of public health as it is projected cut the number of uninsured Americans by more than 50% and increase the health insurance coverage to about 94% of the American population. Buehler et al(2018) posits that reframing the financial relationship between Americans and the healthcare system and resolving the health insurance crisis there is bound to better public health and health of populations as few will forego healthcare on account of costs.(The Patient Protection and Affordable Act of 2010) It is my considered opinion that the elimination of copays and deductibles will lead to an increased number of women who have their annual mammograms as one of the main reasons why individuals do not seek medical services including preventive services like mammograms is the cost barrier (Xu et al, 2019). Other researchers like Trivedi et al (2018) have demonstrated that elimination of cost sharing for mammography under PPACA was associated to increased rates of use of this service among older women.(The Patient Protection and Affordable Act of 2010) Even after addressing the cost of accessing mammography screening, the uptake of deserving women for these services need to enhance as other barriers still exist. Fayanju et al (2018) observe some women do not seek mammography screenings for fear of mammogram associated pain and fear of receiving bad news – that they already have breast cancer. However education intervention programs would resolve these barriers significantly.(The Patient Protection and Affordable Act of 2010) As you continue, premiumacademicaffiates.com has the top and most qualified writers to help with any of your assignments.
