Assignment: Academic Success and Professional Development Plan
Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network

NURS 6003 Part 1: Developing an Academic and Professional Network

Week 1 | Part 1: My Academic and Professional Network

When joining college, nursing students are usually gray in many areas, and professional knowledge develops as they learn concepts in their respective fields and network with peers. For nurses to complete their programs successfully, academic and professional support is essential. This support is enhanced by collaborating inter-professionally. Interprofessional collaboration is vital in nursing since it provides nurses with platforms for social and professional interaction as they work in teams (Moss et al., 2016). It is a way to share knowledge and resources. Networking opens a broader sphere of influence. AccordingNURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network

NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network

to Goolsby and Knestrick (2017), professional networking is an element that enables nurses to communicate with others with shared interests and expertise. It creates relationships that support new opportunities. Khanum et al. (2016) further mentioned that interdisciplinary networking provides nurses with contacts for personal development and establishing contacts that make them better patient care providers. This section of my plan describes the academic and professional resources that I believe will be instrumental in my nursing program.

NETWORK MEMBER 1

Name: Karen Ouzts

Title: Program Director

Organization: Walden University

Academic or Professional: Academic

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:  When pursuing any professional program in a learning institution, it is crucial to look for people who can guide when academic matters are not progressing as expected. They are the people to consult due to their in-depth experience about the practice and educational issues. Dr. Ouzts is well-conversant with Walden University’s academic structure and how the nursing environment operates, having taught in the university for about a decade. She has also taught various courses whose concepts are applicable in many nursing areas and can be consulted on them. They include the role of nurses in population health and preserving health in a diverse society. As a scholar, Dr. Ouzts has written various books and articles, which I will read to improve my experience. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network

NETWORK MEMBER 2

Name: MSN Colleagues

Title: RN/MSN/NP Students

Organization: Walden University

Academic or Professional: Academic

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: Excellence and comfort in nursing depend largely on how nurses team up with their colleagues in the same programs. Under the same program, nurse students handle the same assignments and discuss concepts from different perspectives. MSN colleagues would be vital in discussing issues and overcoming challenges I am likely to experience in the program. The support system we will establish would be critical in forming future networks to enable us to get employment and understand practice requirements and changes occurring every day. I look forward to learning from my colleagues as they learn from me as well.

NETWORK MEMBER 3

Name: Dr. Shari Lawson

Title: MD; Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine

Organization: Johns Hopkins Medicine

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: As I pursue the MSN program, it is crucial to keep learning from others, particularly those involved in the practice directly. Such individuals are adequately informed on matters happening in practice as situations change and how nursing matters, including illness dynamics, change over time. Through them, nurses get insight into how to utilize their knowledge to address population needs. Due to her broad experience in the health practice as an employee of Johns Hopkins, Dr. Shari Lawson would be crucial in research matters and information on emerging issues and how to prepare well to meet the changing professional demands. NETWORK MEMBER 4

Name: Diane Whitehead

Title: Program Director

Organization: Walden University

Academic or Professional: Academic

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes: Diane Whitehead is experienced and honored in many areas of the nursing practice. She has been actively teaching and administering associate degree, bachelor, and graduate nursing programs for a while. Also, she has published several books on the nursing practice and online nursing education. I chose her due to her vast experience in evidence-based practice, having taught several courses in this area. Lehane et al. (2019) and Chien (2019) noted that nurses implement research findings to improve patient outcomes, the work environment, and the clinical practice through evidence-based practice. As I look forward to gaining more knowledge on my program, I will also be looking for guidance and knowledge to supplement what I will be learning. I believe that Diane Whitehead is among the most suited to guide me in this area.

ADDITIONAL NETWORK MEMBERS

Nursing Association (ANA) Members

Title: RN/MSN/NP

Organization: American Nursing Association

Academic or Professional: Professional

Why I selected this individual and/or team and how they will support my success in the MSN program and as a practicing nurse:

Notes:  As a nurse student or when actively engaged in the nursing profession, nurses need a lot of information about professional demands, ideas of excellence or failure, and changes characterizing the health practice over time. The best people to liaise with are those registered in professional bodies. Since these professional bodies have options for nurse students, it is crucial to register to get a chance to know how the health care industry operates. I look forward to benefiting from representation as I use the professional network to expand my knowledge and access more information and resources to become an excellent and committed nurse.

In conclusion, networking enhances professional knowledge diversely. Although nurses gain a lot of information through classwork, they need to discuss concepts from different perspectives, hence networking with their colleagues. Challenges are part of the practice, and nurses require guidance in many areas. Academic and professional networks are the ideal sources of the required support system.

When was the last time you read Meditation XVII of John Donne’s Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions?

Unless you are a student of seventeeth-century poetry, you may not be all that familiar with this piece. However, you may be much more familiar with one of its well-known phrases: “No man is an island…”.

As you begin your journey toward achieving your academic and professional goals, you have a great opportunity to network with academics and professionals who can help ensure you do not travel alone. This network can help to clarify your own vision for success and can help guide you now and in the future. To paraphrase Donne, no one is an island.

Begin creating an academic and professional network by identifying which academic and professional connections and resources with which you need to collaborate to succeed in your MSN program and as a practicing nurse.

SAMPLE DISCUSSION

Professional Network in Nursing

Professional networking is a type of social linkage that focuses entirely on the development of relationships and interaction processes among nurses and medical professionals. One can build a network by engaging in seminars and conferences, attending interviews with other specialists in higher positions in the field of healthcare. Also, building a strong network may require a nurse to work as a volunteer in the nursing-related nonprofit institutions. In-person networking usually yields more productive and intimate relationships. Generally, professional networking creates a great opportunity for nurses to acquire experience and knowledge concerning diverse medical practices and in so doing, through their skills, professionalism and competency, they can attract the attention of the employers (Nursing.Org, 2019). Further, professional networking works perfectively for startups who want to join different working environments. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network

All through, nurses and medical professionals ought to remain at the forefront of breakthroughs in care delivery and healthcare technology. Therefore, constantly updating one’s competency requires dynamic networking. Both the institutional and one-on-one networking may enable an individual to develop knowledge and skills that are needed to keep up with the constantly changing medical profession (Nursing.Org, 2019). To ensure the advancement in nursing practices and general care delivery, different medical institutions usually organize networking events that enable doctors and nurses to expand their professional networks. Major events hosted by prominent healthcare organizations often involve qualified professionals who dispense their knowledge and experiences to the junior staff.

My journey as a nurse has been full of learning moments over the past 3 years, I have become very interested in patients requiring mental health evaluations.  I’ve been part of the healthcare system of the Department of Veteran Affairs for 3 years. My personal and professional goal is been part of the specialty clinic of Mental Health and suicide prevention as a nurse practitioner. To accomplish this goal, I have to be prepared field, and advance my practice as a nurse practitioner.

Public service is my passion and I will be fulfilling my duty to my country providing the best of my knowledge. I consider    Walden University has the right approach and experience to help me provide a state-of-the-art graduate education. My busy schedule with 12-hr. shift plus family was one of the reason I decided to continue my education online. According to the Walden University (2011a) the vision to transform nurses so that they can help the community goes along with my desire to make a better healthcare system. The SON also mention that this program is academically rigorous and contextual relevant. Walden University 2011a, para4). With the faculty and resources they provide, this journey will be one of sacrifices that at the end will put all nurses and the faculty better professionals and at the end the community will benefit of the outcome.

Incorporation of social change

As the Walden university defined positive social change ‘’a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies and action to promote the worth dignity and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures and societies’’ My passion is with the community and public service specially the veteran’s community. A very special community that requires psychiatric and mental evaluation. Suicide rate among veterans is a very high one. Every year 20 veterans unfortunately commit suicide.  With the opportunity of becoming a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner I will contribute and excel the already modernize veterans’ health system.

By Day 7

I wanted to converse about discussion question responses. Overall, this is one of the BEST parts of the week as we all get to engage in an informative discussion on a key issue of the course. To meet the requirements of discussion posts, note the following:

  • First, there are 2 discussion questions each week. Students are required to respond to EACH original discussion post. Example: in Week 1 there is an initial post required that addresses the first discussion question, and an initial post required that addresses the second discussion thread. Both of these posts will be graded as a response to the original question and DO NOT count towards weekly participation.
  • Second, to meet participation requirements, you must respond to 3 other students during the week. You may choose the discussion thread (either the first or the second discussion thread) and student you respond to, or you can respond to the instructor (me), but there must be 3 separate response posts to others in the classroom in order to be eligible for maximum participation points. Again, your initial response to the discussion questions does not count towards participation.

There is an automatic deduction of 1/3 the total points if you only post 2 response messages during the week, and 2/3 of the total points if you only post 1 response message during the week.

  • Finally, each week I will post a CAT (Classroom Assessment Technique) question in the Discussion Board. You can choose either to respond to this question or not, but you are NOT required to do so. However, if you choose to respond to the CAT Discussion Question, that WILL COUNT towards meeting your participation requirement (but not in submitted your response to the original question in each discussion thread). So, if you want to respond to the CAT question, note that your response will be counted and included in meeting your participation requirements.

What type of messages must you post, and what are the word requirements? In general, your messages must be substantive and advance the discussion. In this regard, be sure I would make sure that your post contains around 200+ words. It is difficult to gain influence from your viewpoint without a substantive, comprehensive response. Discussion questions mimic the business world in that you are often asked a particular question (via email, voice mail, etc.) and asked to respond to that question with a detailed, substantive response. With that in mind, here are some great hints on superior discussion posts:

  • Ensure that you answer the question. Here is a great tip to ensure you answer the question asked every time it is asked: use a highlighter and highlight every part of your response that directly answers the question asked.
  • Substantive answers. In the business or professional world, you are often not judged by how many answers you give, but rather the quality of the answer itself. In essence: it is more important to have fewer, high quality posts rather than many, low quality posts. Therefore, concentrate on the right posts, and those posts are reflective of cited information (including facts, statistics, theories, etc.) and substantively and comprehensively address the question or problem at hand. In general, though, it is almost impossible to post a message of substance in less than 150 words, so be sure that your posts meet that criteria.

Include citations. In general, include a citation in about half of your posts. Doing so indicates you have read the course materials and searched far and wide for theories, statistics, and facts, to comprehensively address the issue at hand. With those thoughts, I thought it may be appropriate to offer an example of a great post. This is from a former student who indicated I could share it with you. Here you goRE: Discussion – Week 1Collapse

I have been a nurse for 20 years in clinical and managerial positions.  The pace of technology in healthcare has increased exponentially since I began my career in nursing.  With continuous technological advancements in healthcare, one must be willing to embrace change to succeed.  My philosophy in nursing is to continue to be a lifelong learner; my experiences with technology is the driving force has led me to have an unwavering interest in                                                                                                                                                 My Vision for my time at Walden

I chose Walden because their mission statement promotes a “…diverse array of nursing professionals seeking enhancement of critical thinking skills, abilities to select and implement evidence-based practices, and core and specialty nursing knowledge in order to transform society” (Walden University, 2020). This conforms with my goals to become a practitioner of change, not only for myself with obtaining the knowledge in nursing informatics, but to be able to transform individuals, communities and organizations with simplified navigation and convenient systems, not just another mobile application.

The MS in Nursing Informatics at Walden “prepares nurses to more effectively utilize information technology to enhance the quality of patient care” (Walden University, 2020). This specialization will allow me to optimize the knowledge and experience I already have and enhance my career pursuits. This will enable me to leverage innovation and technology in any healthcare system.

Social Change in My Pursuits

Walden University (2020) defines “positive social changeas a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies”.  This aligns with the core values associated with the nursing profession. In my practice I have educated, mentored and taken care of patients and co-workers.  I am optimistic that I can integrate Nursing Informatics into my practice, although I understand my focus will shift from direct patient care to indirect. Walden University (2020) states that “Positive social change results in the improvement of human and social conditions”. While I might not be directly impacting patient care, facilitating nursing care by effective use of technology ultimately improves quality of care outcomes and decreases frustration from healthcare workers. This parallels my goals and serves as a solid foundation for my current and future practice.

Primary and Secondary Sources

Review the following information prior to selecting resources for assignments.

Primary: A primary source is an original document that is the first account of what happened. A research report is primary, and you can tell because it includes materials and methods demonstrating how the research was done. Some creative work is also primary, such as poetry, novels, and interviews of people who experienced something firsthand. In nursing, which is an evidence-based discipline, we strive to use primary research that is published in scholarly, peer-reviewed journals.

Scholarly, peer-reviewed journal: Scholarly journals publish papers by professional authors and experts in the field using a peer-review process to review the work and assure quality before publishing. The focus of a scholarly journal is to provide accurate information for scholars and other researchers. The focus is on content rather than advertising, a direct contrast to popular media. Scholarly journals publish both primary and secondary papers, the former usually noted as original research and the latter as reviews and commentaries. Letters to the editor may also be published but should be recognized as opinion pieces.

Note: When selecting articles for course assignments, you are advised (unless you are referencing seminal information) to focus on work published within the past five years.

Secondary: A secondary source is one step removed from the original source. This work interprets and often compiles other work, and it includes review articles, textbooks, fact sheets, and commentaries about a topic. It also includes news reports of original research. Secondary work is more prone to error and bias than primary work because it is being filtered through an additional person or persons. Review papers can be useful to glean information about a topic and to find other sources from the reference list, but it is the original, primary research that should be relied on most heavily in demonstrating scholarship, depth, and validation of factual information.

Course Assignments

  1. Participation in weekly Discussions: The exchange of ideas among colleagues engaged in scholarly inquiry is a key aspect of learning and is a requisite activity in this course. You are expected to participate each week by posting a response to a prompt or question in the weekly Discussion area. In addition, you are expected to respond to your fellow students’ postings. To count as participation, responses need to be thoughtful; that is, they must refer to the week’s readings, relevant issues in the news, information obtained from other sources, and/or ideas expressed in the postings of other class members. You may ask questions or offer further information or links about the subject. Please pay attention to grammar and spelling, as consistently poorly written posts will receive grade penalties. In grading the required Discussion postings, your Instructor will be using the Discussion Posting and Response Rubric, located in the Course Information area.Note: Unless otherwise noted, initial postings to Discussions are due on or before Day 3, and response postings are due on or before Day 6. You are required to participate in the Discussion on at least three different days (a different day for main post and each response). It is important to adhere to the weekly time frame to allow others ample time to respond to your posting. In addition, you are expected to respond to questions directed toward your own initial posting in a timely manner. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network
  1. Assignments: The Assignments provide you with the opportunity to apply the skills and knowledge gained through the Learning Resources and the practicum experience. See the Assignment area of specific weeks for detailed descriptions of the assignments. In grading the required Assignments, your Instructor will be using rubrics located in the Course Information area.Note: The course Assignments will require that you completely and accurately demonstrate critical thinking via assimilation and synthesis of ideas when using credible, outside and course specific resources (i.e. video, required readings, textbook), when comparing different points of view, highlighting similarities, differences, and connections, and/or when lending support to your Assignment responses.
  1. Portfolio Assignment: Each course in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program for the following specializations includes a Portfolio Assignment: Nursing Education, Nurse Executive, Nursing Informatics, and Public Health Nursing. The Portfolio Assignment is designed to measure specific professional knowledge and skills as outlined in the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Master’s Essentials. Students submit the Portfolio Assignment in the online classroom and a criterion-based scoring rubric is used to grade the assignment. The rubric is aligned with American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Master’s Essentials and provides specific and informative feedback on your performance. The Portfolio Assignment is evaluated by the course Instructor.

Walden University MSN Core Nursing courses – Generic information for success:

  1. Being graduate level adult learners – It is very unlikely that you will experience the quantity of or detailed guidance as in the announcements received in this course. Being so: Read the course announcements thoroughly and completely. Read the course announcements at least daily for any updates. Going forward the Instructors may post items at any time throughout the day or night. I have unfortunately received emails throughout this course with questions for which the information was previously addressed within the announcements. Again, reading the course announcements is imperative for your success. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network
  2. The utilization requirement of APA within assignments will increase as you progress to courses that are considered “writing intense”. The APA requirement within discussions will remain as you experienced within this course. This course is not considered writing intense. Familiarize yourself with the correct usage of APA 7th edition. It is within every graded item, within every Nursing course going forward. Familiarize yourself and utilize the Walden resources for APA assistance. I have diligently posted links to those resources several times during this course.
  3. Use ONLY your Walden student email for communication with any Walden University representative. When communicating with your Instructor ALWAYS include your course number and section. Within this course I posted in the announcements numerous times your specific course number and section, as well asked that you include that information when emailing me. Sadly, I received emails that did not include this information, this delayed my assisting you as I had to request your course number and section. This alerts me that course announcements were not being thoroughly and completely reviewed. Going forward it is highly unlikely Instructors will respond to any email other than your Walden student email as email not in Walden origin routinely gets flagged as spam then deleted. Also be fully aware that Instructors required to respond to any email other than your designated Walden Student email.
  4. Be mindful if you do not participate in any Walden course during the 1st week (Day 1 through Day 7) – you will be removed from the course by Walden University regardless of your excuse. Your Instructor has no control over this – it is university policy! NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network
  5. The grading of any assignment cannot proceed by your Instructor unless you submit your assignments via SafeAssign, then in BlackBoard. Traditionally a -0- score will be awarded, with no resubmission availability. At the Graduate level, you are responsible for your work being submitted per instructions AND grading rubric parameters and due date/time. Again, I strongly encourage you to submit your assignments before Day 7 to ensure yourself sufficient time to seek assistance and correct the issue. Remember SafeAssign Drafts and SafeAssign are different!
  6. For Discussions – There is a six (6) day period (Monday, Day 1 through Saturday, Day 6) allowed for the Discussion participation. No allowances for participation will be made outside of the six (6) Discussion active period. Any submitted post outside of the 6-day active discussion period will not be graded and you will receive a -0- score.
  7. Faculty cannot accept or grade any assignment or discussion through email.
  8. Do not wait until Day 7 to begin or submit your assignment. Assignments are due Day 7. At the Graduate level, you are responsible for your work being submitted per instructions, grading rubric parameters and due date and time. Being so = I strongly encourage you to submit your assignments well before Day 7 to ensure yourself sufficient time to seek assistance and correct any issue encountered. I have purposely made myself available to you each day including weekends and responded to you within 12 to 24 hours. Be mindful, Instructors are not required to respond to you on a daily basis. Going forward your Instructors will respond to your Contact the Instructor communications and emails within the required 48 hours’ time period.
  9. As a graduate level student, Instructors will not reach out to you to ensure your assignments/discussions are completed and submitted correctly. As a graduate level adult learner, it is your responsibility to ensure that your discussions and assignments are completed and submitted timely and correctly. As an adult learner, you need to take the initiative and reach out to your Instructor immediately when you encounter an issue. You were offered an online orientation by Walden University – Did you participate in that orientation? If not, I strongly suggest you contact your advisor and make arrangements.
  10. If you experience technical issues, please utilize your resources and contact the Walden Customer Care Team or Walden IT for assistance. Going forward you will encounter several PowerPoint presentations, Walden Templates within your future courses at Walden University, as well be required to submit multiple items with a single submission. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network
  11. Understand the Time Zones at Walden University and the applicable conversion. Your course calendar is in Eastern Time as is the time/date stamp of submission/participation for your discussions and assignments. Going forward all of your future Nursing courses require that your Discussions, any Quiz or Assignment will continue to be due submitted in Mountain Time.
  12. Have a computer and Internet backup plan. What will you do if your computer crashes or your Internet is not working?  Computer/Internet/work issues are your responsibility. Allowances will not be made due to these issues causing a lack of participation or missed deadline, rather a -0- score will be awarded. Save your work on a flash or hard drive. Know where you can go to access the Academic Skills Center as it is an excellent resource to assist in your success.
  13. For Assignments – Only prior communication with AND Instructor approval will late assignments be considered for grading. Assignments submitted late will be deducted 4% daily until Day 5 OR may deduct the entire 20% regardless of time/day of late submission. This is at the discretion of each Instructor and will vary course-by-course. After Day 5, in any course, the assignment will be scored a -0-. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network
  14. Be familiar with how to access and utilize the Walden resources. I posted the most useful and frequently utilized resources numerous times within the course announcements.
  15. Ensure your discussions have a substance, depth and breadth, critical analysis, and reflection element within the grading rubric. In short – if your discussion Main Post does not closely compare to the discussion exemplar located within the course resources and announcements posted within this course your grade will be drastically reduced.
  16. Know who and where to submit any documentation if necessary, for allowances for any late or missed assignments. Remember Instructors are not permitted to accept any medical documentation.
  17. Know who your advisor is and how to contact them.
  18. Know where and how to locate your student feedback. This course is 6 weeks in duration – In Week 5 I received emails inquiring as to “I see my grade but don’t know why points were deducted” – It was sadly apparent the feedback being provided was not being reviewed by those students. Your numeric score and student feedback are in different locations – this was addressed in the course announcements. If you cannot locate or have not located your student feedback for discussions and assignments – I strongly encourage you to contact the Customer Care Team as you have missed a tremendous amount of information.

Student Resources: Here is a partial listing of Walden University resources that have been shared with you during this course. You will frequent these as you progress throughout your future courses. Again, I strongly recommend that you bookmark each of these for your future courses. NURS 6003 Part 1 Developing an Academic and Professional Network
