Comprehensive Essay on Mental Health Policy for Nursing Students

(Comprehensive Essay on Mental Health Policy for Nursing Students)

The federal government focuses on improving the well-being of individuals with mental illness. For instance, a federal bill, H.R. 7666 (117th): Restoring Hope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act of 2022, was introduced to re-introduce various programs related to mental health and substance abuse disorders (Restoring Hope for Mental Health and Well-Being Act, 2022). The bill is currently in the Senate. The Senate should pass the bill since it incorporates legal and ethical issues like justice in providing mental healthcare. Forrester et al. (2018) observe that it is essential to ensure fairness in the distribution of resources for mental healthcare, such as providing grants to increase access in rural areas, which are usually delineated when providing such services. Based on policy considerations, the bill incorporates every outcome of mental illness, such as substance abuse disorders, homelessness, unemployment, and their relation to the criminal justice system. The bill includes policies for addressing these outcomes to manage serious mental illnesses.(Comprehensive Essay on Mental Health Policy for Nursing Students)

Consequently, based on the nursing view on patient care, the bill will improve access to resources necessary for mental health care. It will positively impact psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners (PMHNP) roles by increasing training and employability, reducing the nurse-to-patient ratio, and improving patient care. It reduces ethnic, racial, and geographic health disparities making it easy for PMHNPs to provide services for mentally-ill people countrywide (Boyer et al., 2019). Additionally, it impacts quality mental care in various ways, such as the grants will reduce the costs and increase accessibility to mental care for the poor. Also, Fletcher et al. (2018) observe that innovations like tele-mental care will facilitate remote treatment and management of severe mental illness.(Comprehensive Essay on Mental Health Policy for Nursing Students)

Furthermore, the bill will positively affect collaborative care and access to psychiatric mental care. Subtitle B focuses on increasing access to diagnosis and treatment services for patients in maternal healthcare. It also increases the uptake of collaborative care strategies like treatment referrals and reauthorizes grants to aid the prevention and treatment of mentally-ill individuals within communities. This will increase the affordability of mental care among communities in rural areas. Lastly, it will facilitate care coordination for individuals with mental problems.(Comprehensive Essay on Mental Health Policy for Nursing Students)
