Systems approach views health inequalities as patterns within the larger rubric of other facets of the human condition, such as educational outcomes and economic development (Jayasinghe, 2015). An extension of the approach is to view systems as complex adaptive systems, for example systems that are ‘open’ and adapt to the environment (Jayasinghe, 2015). They consist of dynamic adapting subsystems that exhibit non-linear interactions, while being ‘open’ to a similarly dynamic environment of interconnected systems (Jayasinghe, 2015). Nursing role in addressing health inequalities/disparities stationed at the front lines of healthcare. We are in a prime position to holistically address the social determinants of health and drive positive patient outcomes (Michael Cirigliano II, 2021). The role of nursing in addressing social determinant cannot be understated. Nurses are key players in promoting health in ways both direct and indirect helping to prevent injury and illness meanwhile serving as advocated for patient for better care (Michael Cirigliano II, 2021). The role of nursing in supporting social determinants of health is at not new. The ability to assess a patient’s social determinants of health is one of the best ways to predict the chance of developing conditions like asthma, COPD and diabetes. Health disparities, which are also called inequalities are factors that differ the persons burden of disease, injury, violence, opportunities, etc. things essential for proper health and function. “Socially disadvantaged” populations are defined by race, ethnicity, location, gender, education, income and disability (CDC).(School of Nursing Health Disparities Discussion)

In rural communities their main issue is finding transportation, access, and affordability for healthcare. As nurses we are responsible to utilize economical development from urban areas to assist with healthcare in rural communities. Nurses are at the front lines of creating support, and advocating for these patients who don’t have the stability in education, housing, reliable transportation, and nutrients. The quasi-experimental design used in this study is descriptive and correlational. Descriptive designs do not have an intervention or treatment and are considered non-experimental which is appropriate for this study. Correlational studies usually measure all available values of an independent variable which is also appropriate for this study. The author says the sample size was small, which could have limited the power and obscured significant effects that may have been revealed with a larger sample. The sample consisted primarily of middle-class European/Canadians who chose to participate in the study; therefore, the results may not generalize to more diverse populations and to family members who chose not to participate. All but one of the parents in the current study were mothers; therefore, the results may not generalize to fathers. Finally, the survivors, parents, and siblings represented different sets of families (turner et al., 2016). The common threat to internal validity in this study is instrumentation and and testing and the threat to external validity is hawthorne effect where people can change their answers because they know that they are being studied.(School of Nursing Health Disparities Discussion)

It was the worst terrorist attack on the United States we had ever seen and had a great impact on many Americans and around the world. In the flow chart in our book, we are shown how a National emergency is handled. After the event occurs, the Federal emergency response team is activated. A Joint Preliminary Damage Assessment is done. The governor of the state requests of the President that a state of emergency is declared. Then, FEMA(Federal Emergency Management Agency) is activated. The president then decides to declare a disaster. The field office discusses the disaster with the Feds and the State governing officials. Then FEMA is signed. I was a mother of two young sons at the time ages 5 and 4. Because I was watching the news in the house they were watching. The media they observed on the television was vivid and violent. I remember them drawing pictures of airplanes on fire, people running and buildings falling down in heaps of smoke. Prior to 9/11, the Columbine school shooting took place in 1999 near our home in Colorado. This also was such a devastating time for us and we were influenced by what we saw and heard and read in and on the radio, television, newspapers, magazines. Chapter 30 figure 2 in our text this week shows the National Health Security Strategy Objectives. One is to build and sustain healthy communities, another is to enhance the production and to use medical and non-medical interventions. Thirdly the objective is to ensure health situational awareness. The fourth objective is to integrate public health, health care, and emergency management. Lastly, the goal is to strengthen global health security. All these objectives can be positively and negatively communicated in the media in all forms depending on what spin the communicator takes.(School of Nursing Health Disparities Discussion)

After the attack on 9/11/2001, Americans began to receive mail that was laced with Anthrax. Some unfortunately lost their loves in this bioterrorism attack, and others fell very ill. The Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes the danger of Anthrax used as a biological weapon saying: “Anthrax makes a good weapon because it can be released quietly and without anyone knowing. The microscopic spores could be put into powders, sprays, food, and water. Because they are so small, you may not be able to see, smell, or taste them.” (2020) After, the attack President George Bush signed into action the Project BioShield Act of 2004 to accelerate research countermeasures like vaccines and treatment for the various agents. Biodefense act brought secure funding, secure research development, and establishing Emergency Use Authorization (EAU). Media at the outset made fear and confusion abound. “Early news coverage of what became known as the “Amerithrax” case was frequently alarmist in tone and included inaccurate information that likely contributed to a climate of confusion and fear.” (Warrick, 2011)
