Dr. Weber and class,
As you consider the next 2-5 years in nursing education, examine the prevailing trends and driving forces you anticipate will impact the nursing curriculum.
As our world changes, students must be prepared with 21st-century knowledge and skills that they will need to enter the multifaceted health care workforce. Educators must realize that teacher-led, one-size-fits-all models are outdated and not beneficial to students (Green &Harrington, 2020). Students embody a mixture of generations with different perceptions and learning necessities. To succeed, faculty must be committed to constructing positive and collaborative educational cultures that value inclusivity and diversity and promote learning (Billings & Halstead, 2020). The trend that will have the dominant driving force and will have the most significant impact on developing nursing curriculums is student-centered learning approaches. Student-centered learning is a philosophy or an approach to education designed to meet each student’s needs individually. The student-centered learning model has four primary characteristics: voice, choice, competency-based progression, and continuous monitoring of student needs (Green & Harrington).
Please explain why you think they will have a significant impact.
The student-centered approach will significantly impact curriculum development due to the paradigm shift in medical education from pedagogy to andragogy and from teacher-centered learning to student-centered learning (Walankar et al., 2019). Academicians are beginning to recognize that learning approaches adopted by adults are different and should mirror how adults prefer to learn. There is a broad continuum of diversity regarding age, life experience, culture, ethnicity, and level of preparedness, which may account for the demand for varied learning approaches and the need to change curriculums (Walankar et al., 2019).

As we look to the next 2-5 years in nursing education, the prevailing trends that may have the greatest impact on nursing curriculum relate to the continued nursing shortage, telehealth, technology, nursing advocacy, and action.
Student satisfaction is a key factor in the success of a program and one way of evaluating the effectiveness of the curriculum. Satisfaction has a dynamic trend over time and innovative teaching, teacher selection, and student-centric focus-based curriculum can improve satisfaction (Rossini et al., 2021). Nurses with technological skills will be in high demand with the increase in the use of mobile devices to document at the bedside. As people age more care is headed to home-based nursing and a focus on geriatric care. Student satisfaction has a significant impact as it drives the success of a program. It is a good indicator of how competitive the organization will be in the industry in gaining new students. Student satisfaction is an indirect measure of quality educational processes, of which curriculum is a key part (Rossini et al., 2021).
Another trend is related to the increasing population of elderly in the United States which is impacting nursing focus on the care of the healthy and frail. Gerontology needs to be recognized as a specialty area by providing individual courses as part of the mandatory curriculum, much like Pediatrics and Psychiatry have done. The better prepared the nursing student becomes in this area the better outcomes we can anticipate for our geriatric population (Gilje et al., 2007).
Climate change is another prevailing trend that will have a big impact on the nursing curriculum in the next few years. Alvarez-Nieto et al., (2022) describe education as a vital intervention needed to stabilize the earth’s climate by 2050. The need to integrate sustainable healthcare into the nursing curriculum is key to raising awareness. There is a belief that a focus on climate change is needed to support positive health and therefore increase support for environmental literacy.
