(Critical Appraisal of Research Comprehensive Essay for Nursing Students)

Interference with work-life balance increases burnout, leading to high turnover and lower career satisfaction.

There is a need to develop interventions and policies to reduce the risks of burnout and improve retention.

(Critical Appraisal of Research Comprehensive Essay for Nursing Students)

Healthcare workers have high burnout rates, leading to fatigue and depersonalization.

Acuity-adjusted staffing and user-friendly electronic documentation can improve healthcare settings.

There are significant relationships between various burnout and life quality dimensions among nurses.

Controlling sources of burnout such as high workload and low satisfaction, using social media to show the positive side of the nursing profession, improving teamwork and collaboration, and training on strategies to deal with stressors are recommended for managing burnout.

Counseling sessions, monetary bonuses, manager support, more off days for married staff and those who work alternated shifts, assigning fewer cases to critical care staff.

Part 3B: Critical Appraisal of Research

Burnout among frontline healthcare workers is a significant issue affecting the healthcare landscape in the United States. Specifically, escalating workload, inadequate support, inadequate investment in healthcare, and administration are among healthcare workers’ long list of primary determinants of burnout (Murthy, 2022). Arguably, the increasing patient population and the dynamics of healthcare issues have laid bare the impact of burnout not only on the physical and mental health of frontline healthcare workers but also on patient health outcomes and the efficiency of the healthcare systems. As a result, burnout among healthcare workers and, particularly, Most interventions have been identified and recommended in most healthcare institutions to mitigate burnout. Still, the questions of the most effective intervention remain at large.

The reviewed literature presents various suggestions to mitigate burnout in healthcare settings. For example, Afrasiabi et al. (2021) recommend acupressure, acupuncture, and ear massage are safe, effective, and reliant intervention for managing burnout and secondary stress among healthcare workers and helps in establishing crucial social relationships with patients and family. However, Afrasiabi et al. (2021) did not establish a statistically significant impact of the interventions on healthcare workers’ anxiety, burnout, and caring capacity.(Critical Appraisal of Research Comprehensive Essay for Nursing Students)

Bethea & Samanta (2020) suggest developing interventions and policies to reduce burnout risks and improve retention. Moreover, Boamah et al. (2022) recommend acuity adjusted staffing and user-friendly electronic documentation can improve healthcare settings. Lastly, Khatatbeh et al. (2022) suggest controlling sources of burnout such as high workload and low satisfaction, using social media to show the bright side of the nursing profession, improving teamwork and collaboration, and training on strategies to deal with stressors are recommended for managing burnout. Khatatbeh et al. (2022) also recommend counseling sessions, monetary bonuses, manager support, more off days for married staff and those who work alternated shifts, and assigning fewer cases to critical care staff.(Critical Appraisal of Research Comprehensive Essay for Nursing Students)

Arguably, there is no one size fits all intervention recommended for mitigating burnout among healthcare personnel due to the different healthcare landscapes at national and local levels. In this case, the challenges affecting one healthcare institution differ from that of another (Oleribe et al., 2019). For instance, privately funded healthcare institutions are known to be well equipped and often attract most healthcare graduates compared to publicly-funded institutions, experiencing high turnover.(Critical Appraisal of Research Comprehensive Essay for Nursing Students)

Nevertheless, acuity-adjusted staffing would be the best practice for solving burnout among frontline healthcare workers. Presently, most hospital facilities are run on the nurse-patient ratio model. However, the patient population increase, the complexity of diseases, and low staffing levels result in negative patient outcomes. Acuity staffing uses patient data to establish staffing patterns (Juvé‐Udina et al., 2020). The acuity staffing model, therefore, incorporates patient acuity, i.e., the severity of patient illness, which is vital in prioritizing staff needs. As a result, the existing staff does not feel overwhelmed, and patients are taken care of based on their needs. The outcome of such a model includes low workloads and reduced burnout. Ideally, nursing staff would feel supported by the acuity staffing model compared to other interventions. This recommendation does not disregard other interventions but suggests a more cost-effective and efficient intervention for mitigating burnout among healthcare workers in the long term.(Critical Appraisal of Research Comprehensive Essay for Nursing Students)

Studies have shown the impact of acuity staffing on burnout and patient safety. For example, al-Twigg et al. (2021) established that acuity staffing improves patient safety, reduces care costs, and promotes staff satisfaction. Generally, the interventions suggest that establishing a mechanism to support staff work and life balance is crucial in mitigating burnout and promoting patient safety. Therefore, comparing work-life balance and other issues affecting it would provide crucial information in justifying its significance as a mitigation measure.(Critical Appraisal of Research Comprehensive Essay for Nursing Students)
