Foundations for Project Design: Purpose of the Project
Discussion
Purpose
The purpose of this discussion is to demonstrate your understanding of the elements of project design for the DNP-prepared nurse. The discussion is intended to introduce the purpose of your project related to the organizational need at the practicum site.(Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients)
Instructions

Course Outcomes
This discussion enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:
- Design an evidence-based translational science project to address a practice problem. (POs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
- Apply effective strategies in project design for managing practice problems in healthcare delivery at the micro, meso, and macro-system levels. (POs 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9(Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients)
- Demonstrate project management and leadership skills in the design process for the evidence-based translational science project. (POs 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients
Medication non-adherence is a common issue among Schizophrenia patients. It affects about half of all patients, increasing the risks of symptom relapse and hospitalization (Desai & Nayak, 2019). The PICOT practice question is, for adults with a history of schizophrenia (P) in the outpatient setting, does the implementation of technology with motivational interviewing (I), compared with current practice (C), impact medication non-adherence (O) in 8-10 weeks (T)? The current practice refers to interventions at the practicum site instituted to mitigate the problem of medication non-adherence among schizophrenia patients.(Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients)
This DNP project aims to assess the impact of technology with motivational interviewing (MI) on medication adherence among schizophrenia patients in an inpatient mental health setting to prevent symptom exacerbation, relapse, and prolonged hospitalization. The first objective is to evaluate the role of technology on medication adherence among inpatient schizophrenia patients. Secondly, it aims to assess the impact of motivational interviews (MI) on medication adherence among inpatient schizophrenia patients. Lastly, the project will compare the impact of technology with motivational interviewing on medication adherence, motivational interviewing, and technology independently among inpatient schizophrenia patients.(Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients)

FAQs
Is motivational interviewing for medication adherence in patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders?
Motivational interviewing is a patient-centered counseling technique often utilized to enhance medication adherence in individuals with schizophrenia spectrum disorders. Through empathetic communication and collaboration, clinicians aim to elicit patients’ intrinsic motivations for adhering to their prescribed medications, addressing any ambivalence or barriers they may face. By fostering a non-judgmental and supportive environment, motivational interviewing seeks to empower patients to make informed decisions about their treatment, ultimately promoting better medication adherence and improved clinical outcomes in the management of schizophrenia spectrum disorders.(Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients)
How motivational interviewing can increase medication adherence?
Motivational interviewing (MI) can increase medication adherence by employing patient-centered communication techniques that enhance intrinsic motivation for adhering to medication regimens. Through open-ended questions, reflective listening, and empathy, MI fosters a collaborative dialogue between healthcare providers and patients. By exploring patients’ ambivalence and concerns about medication, MI helps to resolve discrepancies between their goals and behaviors, leading to a greater sense of ownership over their treatment. This approach empowers patients to articulate their reasons for adherence and develop personalized strategies to overcome barriers, ultimately promoting a stronger commitment to taking medications as prescribed.(Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients)
Is motivational interviewing good for schizophrenia?
Motivational Interviewing (MI) can be a valuable approach in the treatment of schizophrenia. While MI is typically used to address ambivalence and enhance motivation for behavior change, its principles of empathy, collaboration, and person-centered communication can be adapted to engage individuals with schizophrenia in their treatment plans. MI may help individuals explore their thoughts and feelings about medication adherence, therapy participation, and lifestyle changes, thereby potentially improving treatment outcomes. However, schizophrenia is a complex disorder, and MI should be integrated within a comprehensive treatment framework that includes antipsychotic medication, psychotherapy, and support services for optimal results. Consulting mental health professionals with expertise in both MI and schizophrenia is recommended for effective implementation.(Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients)
What is the effect of motivational interviewing on medication adherence and hospitalization rates in nonadherent patients with multi episode schizophrenia
Motivational interviewing (MI) has demonstrated a positive effect on medication adherence and hospitalization rates in nonadherent patients with multi-episode schizophrenia. MI is a patient-centered counseling approach that aims to elicit intrinsic motivation for behavior change. In this context, MI has been shown to enhance patients’ understanding of their illness, reduce ambivalence about medication, and increase their willingness to adhere to prescribed treatments. As a result, improved medication adherence leads to a decrease in relapse rates and hospitalizations among individuals with multi-episode schizophrenia who might otherwise struggle with treatment engagement. However, the degree of success can vary based on individual factors, the skill of the interviewer, and the overall treatment approach.(Impact of Technology with Motivational Interviewing on Medication Adherence Amoong Schizophrenia Patients)
