PRACTITIONER FACULTIES (NONPF) COMPETENCIES

The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) has determined nine broad areas of core competence that apply to all nurse practitioners, regardless of specialty or patient population focus. NONPF created the first set of Nurse Practitioner Competencies in 1990; the most recent updates were incorporated in 2017. This course was designed to prepare you to synthesize knowledge gained throughout the program and to apply each of the nine core competencies within your selected areas of practice and your representative communities.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) Competencies

NONPF competencies were developed by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties (NONPF) to act as guidelines for nurse practitioner (NP) programs (NurseJournal, 2022). The NONPF competencies should be achieved to facilitate entry for graduates of a nurse practitioner (NP) educational program. These competencies include scientific foundations, leadership, quality, practice inquiry, technology and information literacy, policy, health delivery system, ethics, and independent practice apply to all population foci and NP specializations.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Scientific Foundations

Scientific foundation competencies are based on the need for students to analyze and use data to evaluate, enhance, and improve healthcare service delivery (NurseJournal, 2022). Through the PMHNP program, I have learned to use critical thinking, evidence-based practice guidelines, and scientific principles that underpin clinical practice when providing mental health care. Moreover, I have acquired knowledge across various disciplines supporting psychiatric practice, such as pharmacotherapy, pharmacology, and physiology, and gained the ability to translate research to inform practice processes and patient outcomes.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Leadership

Leadership competencies are based on the need for students to develop accountability, advocacy, and scholarship in their future nursing profession (NurseJournal, 2022). The competencies allow students to understand the standards and scope of practice and develop the capacity to collaborate and lead others in clinical teams across healthcare settings. As such, leadership competencies incorporate communication skills, registering as a member of professional organizations, and practicing cultural sensitivity in clinical practice. The PMHNP program has emphasized leadership and management skills crucial for effective nursing practice. Moreover, the program underscores the significance of teamwork and collaboration in psychiatric practice. I have gained these leadership skills, such as critical and reflective thinking, by working across interdisciplinary teams during practicum and assuming leadership roles on certain occasions in patient care.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Quality

The quality competencies are developed to emphasize the significance of research and its role in advancing health outcomes (NurseJournal, 2022). These competencies allow student nurses to understand how to access, appraise, and translate current evidence into practice, including policies and organizational structures. The PMHNP program has prepared me to meet the quality competency by providing the necessary skills to assess, monitor, and improve the quality of patient care, improve patient safety, and manage risks. I have also learned about quality improvement frameworks, performance measures, and best practices for providing quality patient care.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Practice Inquiry

Practice inquiry competencies promote the capacity of nurses to translate research in clinical settings (NurseJournal, 2022). Therefore, nurse practitioners develop an understanding of research methods and critical thinking skills to evaluate existing research and the efficiency of existing clinical standards and modify guidelines to improve health outcomes. The PMHNP program provides the necessary skills to use in research work and evidence-based practice to improve patient care. Moreover, I can provide appropriate leadership in transiting evidence into practice, generate new knowledge through literature appraisal, investigate existing evidence to identify interventions for quality improvement, and disseminate the evidence to the relevant target audience.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Technology and Information Literacy

Technology and Information Literacy competencies emphasize the need to NPs to incorporate advanced technologies to improve patient outcomes (NurseJournal, 2022). As such, NPs should develop competencies in using new technologies to Health care technologies allow NPs to create, access, manage, and integrate healthcare information to facilitate efficient healthcare delivery. The PMHNP program provides the necessary skills to use technology and informatics to support patient care. For instance, I have learned about electronic health records, telehealth, and other technologies used in nursing practice and developed competencies in applying a dozen during practicum.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Policy

Policy competencies emphasize the importance of healthcare guidelines used to supervise and aid decision-making related to patient care (NursingJournal, 2022). Policies are crucial in the allocation of resources at various levels of healthcare management. The PMHNP program has facilitated policy competencies by providing the necessary knowledge and skills related to healthcare policy and advocacy. I have learned about the policy process, how to evaluate existing policies, advocate for policies promoting health equity, and engage in political action.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Health Delivery System

Health delivery system competencies emphasize the need for nurses to engage in planning, developing, and implementing healthcare programs for various communities (NurseJOurnal, 2022). NPs learn the tenets of developing appropriate methods of healthcare delivery that address challenges affecting the healthcare landscape. Through the PMHNP program, I have gained knowledge and skills to understand the complex healthcare system and the role of nursing in delivering quality care. Moreover, I have learned about healthcare organizations and systems, financing, policy, and the impact of social determinants of health on patient outcomes.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Ethics

Ethics competencies emphasize the need for NPs to understand the nursing code of ethics as applied to the healthcare community (NursingJournal, 2022). NPs are trained to consider ethical implications for any decision made in practice and appraise its effects on care delivery. Through the PMHNP program, I have developed the knowledge and skills to practice ethically and make sound ethical decisions in nursing practice. I have learned about ethical principles and frameworks, such as autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice, as well as ethical issues in mental health care, such as confidentiality, informed consent, and boundary violations.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Independent Practice

Independent practice competencies focus on the need to NPs to have the necessary academic and professional training for their specialty (NurseJournal, 2022). Therefore, NPs can provide healthcare services permitted by existing legislation. The PMHNP program taught me about advanced nursing practice, including diagnosing and treating mental health disorders, prescribing medications, and managing patient care. Therefore, I have the knowledge and skills to assess, diagnose, and treat patients with minimal supervision.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Engaging in a Social Change

As a practitioner, I will advocate for policies that promote the use of technology in patient care delivery. This would involve working with local healthcare to implement telehealth programs that improve access to care for underserved populations. In addition, I will advocate for policies that promote mental health and wellness. This will involve working with the local policymakers to improve access to mental health services and promote policies that reduce stigma related to mental illness. Moreover, I will collaborate with healthcare organizations to develop and implement programs that address social determinants of health, such as poverty, homelessness, and lack of access to care. I will also engage in programs that educate patients and their families about the healthcare system and how to navigate it, educate patients and their families about ethical issues related to mental health care and involve them in decision-making processes.(The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)

Legislative Activities in NJ

In New Jersey, there are two organizations whose activities are directly tied to mental health practice, the Forum for Nurses in Advanced Practice of New Jersey (FNAP) and the Society of Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurses (SPAPN) (FNAP, n.d; SPAPN, n.d). FNAP and SPAPN advocate for full practice authority for nurse practitioners in the state to allow NPs to practice to the full extent of their scope. Moreover, FNAP nurtures and promotes NP roles, while SPAPN promotes high-quality care delivery to the community. (The National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties Competencies Essay)
