Project Title

A Nurse Led Intervention in Schizophrenia Patients to Improve Medication Adherence Compliance(The DNP Project Problem Development and Practice Gap Essay for Nursing Students)

Research Problem and Practice Gap

This DNP project aims to address the issue of treatment nonadherence among schizophrenia patients. Nonadherence is a significant issue that has an impact on patients in the worldwide and American healthcare systems. Most studies report high rates of nonadherence among schizophrenia patients on antipsychotic medications. The percentage of treatment nonadherence for schizophrenia is 50% worldwide (Viveiros et al., 2020). In contrast, individuals with schizophrenia report a nonadherence rate of between 26.5% and 58.8% (Salzmann-Erikson & Sjödin, 2018). Nonadherence is asssociated with psychotic exacerbation, illness progression, higher mortality rates, a higher risk of suicide, hospital readmission, and higher healthcare expenses. Schizophrenia patients welcome discussions about medications provided by medical professionals even while they continue to be uninformed about their prescriptions (Salzmann-Erikson & Sjödin, 2018). Patients’ continued lack of information about their medications creates a significant practice gap that needs addressing. The adoption of strategies by practitioners to involve patients in their care is encouraged. Currently, at the practicum site, a concerning percentage of patients with schizophrenia acknowledge that they forget to take their prescriptions, find them too expensive to buy, and lack knowledge about drug regimens and illness processes. There is no established standard quality improvement system for bettering drugs for people with mental illnesses. In order to increase adherence, this doctor of nurse practice (DNP) study will adopt motivational interviewing (MI) and technology in the form of text messages sent from mobile phones to encourage behavior change towards adherence and serve as reminders, respectively.(The DNP Project Problem Development and Practice Gap Essay for Nursing Students)

FAQs

The DNP Project Problem Development and Practice Gap Essay for Nursing Students

How to encourage medication compliance in schizophrenia?

Encouraging medication compliance in schizophrenia involves a multi-faceted approach. First, establishing a strong therapeutic relationship between the patient and mental health provider is crucial, fostering trust and open communication. Providing psychoeducation about the importance of medication, potential benefits, and side effects helps empower patients to make informed decisions. Simplifying medication regimens, utilizing reminder systems, involving family or caregivers in the treatment plan, and addressing any barriers to access or affordability can further enhance adherence and overall treatment outcomes.

What is a best nursing intervention to promote medication adherence?

One effective nursing intervention to promote medication adherence is patient education. Nurses can provide clear and comprehensive explanations about the importance of the prescribed medication, its benefits, potential side effects, and proper administration techniques. Engaging in open communication with patients, addressing their concerns, and involving them in shared decision-making can enhance their understanding and motivation to adhere to the medication regimen. Additionally, utilizing tools such as medication organizers or reminder apps, tailored to the patient’s routine and preferences, can further support consistent adherence.

What interventions are used to improve medication adherence?

Interventions to improve medication adherence typically involve a combination of educational, behavioral, and technological approaches. These may include providing clear and simple instructions about the medication regimen, utilizing reminders such as alarms or text messages, offering counseling or support groups to address concerns and misconceptions, and employing pill organizers or blister packs to organize doses. Additionally, healthcare providers may collaborate closely with patients to tailor the regimen to their lifestyle and preferences, thereby enhancing their commitment to taking medications as prescribed.

What is treatment compliance in schizophrenia?

Treatment compliance in schizophrenia refers to the extent to which individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia adhere to their prescribed treatment plan, which typically includes taking antipsychotic medications, attending therapy sessions, and engaging in psychosocial interventions. High treatment compliance is crucial for managing symptoms, preventing relapses, and improving overall quality of life. Non-compliance can lead to worsened symptoms, increased hospitalizations, and reduced treatment effectiveness. Therefore, promoting and ensuring treatment compliance is a significant aspect of managing schizophrenia.
