Practicum Experience Plan Purpose Statement

Successful completion of the programs depends on the appropriate goal development, which guides students through what they are expected to accomplish for the course and the program at large. According to Aghera et al. (2018) and Yusuff (2018), students should strive to pursue the created goals for successful performance and promotion of learning activities. Appropriate comprehension of the course content is necessary for developing goals, monitoring progress throughout the course, and facilitating success in the national exam. This paper aims to explore three or four objectives, planned activities, and modes of assessment and state what is expected as the course outcome.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Part 2

Objective 1: To understand the selection of appropriate and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for patient treatment plans and medication prescriptions within four weeks, such as applying informed consent across all age groups based on state regulations.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Planned Activities

I will ask the patients about the medication they previously used and their effectiveness. I will give them various treatment options and allow them to choose the least restrictive one and the one with the highest risk. Belasen and Belasen (2018) believe that engaging patients in developing a treatment plan is crucial in enhancing positive treatment outcomes.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Mode of Assessment

I will personally assess the patients through face-to-face interactions. Belasen and Belasen (2018) illustrate that the one-to-one approach will enable patients to provide all the necessary information for their psychiatric evaluation. Informed consent must also be employed before medication prescription. Grant (2021) explains that informing patients about the risks and benefits of medication before making prescriptions is necessary. This approach is essential because most psychiatric patients are not treatment compliant due to challenges in affording the medication prescribed.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

PRAC Course Outcome(s) Addressed

The assessment will enhance my knowledge about a suitable approach to address my patient’s needs and build an excellent professional relationship with them. This will make me a great Nurse Practitioner and help achieve positive patient outcomes since patients believe that a positive relationship with the provider can guarantee effective treatment by clearly communicating their needs to the provider.
Objective 2: The second objective is to learn to independently conduct and interpret various screening techniques based on age-specific screening tools within five weeks of practice.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Planned Activities

Based on their screening result and response, I will develop a suitable individualized treatment plan for my patients. Putting all the information obtained from the patients together will help develop a treatment plan specific to their symptoms and illness (Asmirajanti et al., 2019).(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Mode of Assessment

I will give my patients the questionnaire for the appropriate screening tool recommended for their age and diagnosis. I will enlighten them on the need to respond correctly to items in the questionnaire since they will inform the development of patient-centered treatment interventions and care plans.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

PRAC Course Outcome(s) Addressed

By the end of this clinical rotation, I aim to gain adequate knowledge on administering and interpreting a screening tool for my patient and effectively utilize it for their treatment plan. I will also share the result of the screening tools with the other treatment team members to use in developing appropriate treatment plan options, including patient referrals and the psychotherapy approach.
Objective 3: I aim to understand appropriate documentation practices required for proper psychiatric evaluation, including the age-specific legal and ethical standards, intake interviews, and referral procedures within five weeks of practice. Accurate documentation promotes patient care by capturing each patient detail to help devise a treatment plan for quick recovery and positive treatment outcomes (Asmirajanti et al., 2019).(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Planned Activities

I plan to explore the appropriate documentation practices with my preceptor, ask questions, and independently create correct documentation of up to two patients within one week.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Mode of Assessment

I will assess my progress by documenting patient psychiatric evaluation during my clinical rotation and do more intake assessments and referrals. I will also develop flashcards on psychiatric evaluation and documentation to enhance my comprehension of the documentation practices.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

PRAC Course Outcome(s) Addressed

By the end of this clinical rotation, I plan to learn effective documentation, intake assessment, and age-appropriate referrals for my patients. Correct documentation practices will help me practice with the scope of PMHNP practice and ensure the achievement of positive patient outcomes.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Nursing and Psychotherapy Theories

Nursing Theory

I will utilize the grand theory concept, specifically Peplau’s interpersonal relationships theory, to promote understanding and develop positive nurse-patient relationships. Forchuk (2021) observes that grand theories are crucial in shaping healthcare concepts important in mental healthcare delivery, and nurses gain skills and knowledge vital to work effectively in their specialties. Peplau’s theory emphasizes the importance of a therapeutic association between nurses and patients in enhancing nurses’ understanding of different patients’ emotions and behavior that can be leveraged to promote positive health outcomes (Forchuk, 2021). The theory is crucial in encouraging nurses’ development of an attitude of mind that provides a framework for practice, leading to positive patient outcomes.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Counseling Theory

I will adopt psychotherapy as a counseling theory during the practicum experience, particularly person-centered therapy (PCT). Psychotherapy theories provide a framework for interpreting patients’ feelings, thoughts, and behavior to help them cope with diagnosis and treatment. For instance, PCT focuses on the importance of a therapist-patient relationship in improving the treatment process and outcomes (Renger, 2021). Therefore, PMHNPs can use PCT to create a supportive and empathetic environment for their patients, which can help promote healing and personal growth.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)

Part 3

Timeline of Practicum Activities

My practicum schedule objective is to achieve 144-160 hours of practicum experience and attend to at least 80 patients. I am aware of the possibility of not completing the practicum hours before eight weeks and that I may not engage in practicum activities for more than eight hours daily unless pre-approved by my faculty.

Conclusion

A comprehensive examination of the practicum SMART goals will promote my success in the course and national examination. I believe I have learned a lot during the program, but there is still more to cover, especially to succeed in the national exam. In this case, all the objectives, planned activities, and course outcomes must be followed promptly with discipline and good time management. To succeed in an academic environment and life, one needs to set a higher and more specific goal, which is one of the best management tools to increase personal performance and motivation (Höpfner & Keith, 2021). Thus, the SMART goals will provide appropriate guidelines for achieving maximum experience during the practicum.(Practicum Experience Plan Comprehensive Essay Example)
