CLASSMATE 1

Performance Evaluation Process

A summative assignment is often a signature assignment and is an overall evaluation of the understanding of the knowledge and skills learned during that course. Nursing students can be expected to be proficient in many different clinical psychomotor skills, through summative assessment these skills can be assessed for proficiency (Kemery & Morrell, 2020).(Comprehensive Discussion Essay on the Performance Evaluation Process for Nursing Students)

In the scenario of the clinical nurse educator evaluating student nurses on their medication competency both a written and clinical demonstration-based evaluation can be administered at the end of the course. The written assessment would evaluate the overall didactic understanding of the concepts and skills taught throughout their rotation such as the 7 rights of medication administration. Then the clinical demonstration can be a simulation, or an actual patient bedside with a medication pass where the student must begin with patient introductions and patient identification, all the way through the medication pass, education, and documentation.(Comprehensive Discussion Essay on the Performance Evaluation Process for Nursing Students)

Evaluation alignment

The summative assessment of the students at the end of the program on their knowledge and skill set competency is essential in providing safe and effective nursing care to the patients they serve. This aligns directly with the course outcome. Both formative and summative evaluations can be used in simulation-based assessments to evaluate the acquisition of competency (Arrogante et al., 2021). The ability to demonstrate the knowledge before moving on to the next step in the program is essential and is part of a summative assessment of required core clinical competencies (Gurkova et al., 2018).(Comprehensive Discussion Essay on the Performance Evaluation Process for Nursing Students)

QUESTION 2

Question:

We have previously discussed how students have different learning approaches and styles. An effective learning environment is prepared to address and to support different learning styles.

The educator should be visible, emphatic, present, and engaged with learners. Listening is a great skill to adopt. Any learner-centric evaluation should be respectful, encouraging, timely, and provide a positive message of support.

What performance evaluation method do you prefer and why?

CLASSMATE 3

Describe the process you will use to evaluate the performance of each student.

Summative evaluations are an assessment of learning conducted retrospectively after the students have completed the course. Nurse educators can use summative evaluations to determine competence and readiness (Arrogante et al., 2021; Bin Mubayrik, 2020; Mogali et al., 2020). To complete a competency evaluation for seven students, I would begin by administering a written examination to evaluate the students’ comprehension of medication calculations. Next, I would create a step-by-step rubric outlining the medication administration process with emphasis on the importance of the patient identification process and the five rights of medication administration (Institute for Healthcare Advancement, IHI, 2022). I would provide each of the students with a copy of the rubric prior to the day of evaluation so they have time to review and ask questions. Before taking the students to the patient’s bedside to administer medications, I would ensure competence and safety by having each student demonstrate a med pass in a simulated environment.(Comprehensive Discussion Essay on the Performance Evaluation Process for Nursing Students)

Examine how this evaluation aligns with the following course outcome: Provides safe and effective nursing care.

The summative evaluation I have described aligns with the course outcome: provides safe and effective nursing care because it focuses on patient safety. The rubric will emphasize the importance of the patient identification process and the five rights of medication administration which are both key to ensuring patient safety in the clinical environment (IHA, 2022). It is essential to ensure that each student is competent in medication calculation and medication administration before taking them to the patient’s bedside to administer medications.(Comprehensive Discussion Essay on the Performance Evaluation Process for Nursing Students)

Response to Classmate 1

Hello,

Thank you for the great post. Summative assessment help evaluate students’ learning, skill acquisition, and academic performance at the end of a course or instructional unit. Students’ performance is compared against set standards or benchmarks (Arrogante et al., 2021). Summative assignments are typically high stakes and contribute significant point value. Assignments include end-of-term or midterm exams and chapter tests or assignments. The assessments demonstrate how learning extent will contribute to overall degree classification (Helminen et al., 2016). I agree that you can adopt written and clinical demonstration-based evaluation at the end of the course to evaluate students’ comprehension of concepts and skills acquisition. It is paramount for nursing students to demonstrate adequate clinical competence. Summative assessment evaluates students’ understanding at the end of the course. Therefore, it aligns with course content and outcomes. Indeed it is recommended to combine summative and formative assessment in simulation-based assessment.(Comprehensive Discussion Essay on the Performance Evaluation Process for Nursing Students)

Your discussion is informative and intriguing. Summative evaluations assess students’ understanding and skills acquisition after completing a unit, course, or chapter (Arrogante et al., 2021). Written examinations are effective because they are more informative than oral evaluations. Students can clearly and easily understand written questions and answers as they are more succinct. Written examinations require students to offer supporting evidence compared to other forms of assessments like viva voce and oral presentations. Rubrics are a vital facilitator of assignments because it helps students and teachers recognize and understand quality work. Students can quickly identify what they should do and how grades will be awarded. I agree that the summative assessment aligns with course outcomes because it ensures safe and effective patient care, hence patient safety.(Comprehensive Discussion Essay on the Performance Evaluation Process for Nursing Students)

Question 2

Performance Evaluation Method of Preference

Formative assessment is preferred to summative assessment because it leads to higher student satisfaction (Arrogante et al., 2021). Summative assessment compels educators to teach to the test and encourages students to memorize rather than understand the course concepts. On the other hand, formative assessment offers instant feedback, allowing teachers to see students’ progress grasping course materials and immediately decide to update or adjust their teaching approaches or curriculum (Andreassen & Malling, 2019). Formative assessments create a more participatory environment for students and enhance cooperation. Additionally, it offers a more precise or accurate view of if learners are learning.(Comprehensive Discussion Essay on the Performance Evaluation Process for Nursing Students)
