The summative assessment of the students at the end of the program on their knowledge and skill set competency is essential in providing safe and effective nursing care to the patients they serve. This aligns directly with the course outcome. Both formative and summative evaluations can be used in simulation-based assessments to evaluate the acquisition of competency (Arrogante et al., 2021). Describe the process you will use to evaluate the performance of each student.

Summative evaluations are an assessment of learning conducted retrospectively after the students have completed the course. Nurse educators can use summative evaluations to determine competence and readiness (Arrogante et al., 2021; Bin Mubayrik, 2020; Mogali et al., 2020). To complete a competency evaluation for seven students, I would begin by administering a written examination to evaluate the students’ comprehension of medication calculations. Next, I would create a step-by-step rubric outlining the medication administration process with emphasis on the importance of the patient identification process and the five rights of medication administration (Institute for Healthcare Advancement, IHI, 2022). I would provide each of the students with a copy of the rubric prior to the day of evaluation so they have time to review and ask questions. The summative evaluation I have described aligns with the course outcome: provides safe and effective nursing care because it focuses on patient safety. Your discussion is informative and intriguing. Summative evaluations assess students’ understanding and skills acquisition after completing a unit, course, or chapter (Arrogante et al., 2021). Written examinations are effective because they are more informative than oral evaluations. Students can clearly and easily understand written questions and answers as they are more succinct. Written examinations require students to offer supporting evidence compared to other forms of assessments like viva voce and oral presentations. Rubrics are a vital facilitator of assignments because it helps students and teachers recognize and understand quality work. Students can quickly identify what they should do and how grades will be awarded. Formative assessment is preferred to summative assessment because it leads to higher student satisfaction (Arrogante et al., 2021). Summative assessment compels educators to teach to the test and encourages students to memorize rather than understand the course concepts. On the other hand, formative assessment offers instant feedback, allowing teachers to see students’ progress grasping course materials and immediately decide to update or adjust their teaching approaches or curriculum (Andreassen & Malling, 2019). Formative assessments create a more participatory environment for students and enhance cooperation.
