Portfolios from Prospective Nurse Educators
Introduction National discourse on nursing staff shortages in U.S. nurse faculty has made many nurses interested and desire to shift from their current nursing practice so that they can pursue a nurse educator role. Believed to be eager in sharing their clinical skills and expertise in a teaching capacity, many of these aspiring nurse educators have lingering questions on what it takes one to transition from a setting g in clinical practice to the academic nursing world be it on a part-time or full- time basis (Mukumbang & Alindekane, 2017).(Portfolios from Prospective Nurse Educators) Health experts have a consensus that the main reason why there is a shortage of Registered Nurses (RNs) is due to the ever-increasing shrinkage of the pool of nursing factors. Majority of these pundits recognize an aging R.N. workforce, the rising demand of healthcare coupled with the inadequate pipeline of Masters and Doctoral degree nurse holders cause the shortage of nursing professionals in the U.S. projected to last the better part of the third decade in the third millennium. A more precise understanding of the nursing shortage has led to the introduction of measures and strategies that will resolve this issue at the federal, state, and local levels with the need to alleviate nursing shortage faculty a top priority. Consequently, this paper purposes of determining why modern healthcare employers continue to demand portfolios from prospective nurse educators. To begin, a portfolio refers to a collection of projects as well as materials developed by a student that document realization of the clinical course objectives.(Portfolios from Prospective Nurse Educators) Why Modern Employers Require a Nurse Educator to Attach Portfolios in Teaching Role Applications Contemporary employers in the healthcare industry are asking prospective nurse educators to attach their portfolios because it is in them (portfolios) that the student has a change of compiling objective evidence of having acquired skills and expertise that they have gained through practical experience(Bastable, 2014). The use of portfolios in nursing education offers the advantage of providing the students a chance of what they have done even before would-bee- employer has placed them in their staff if only under probation. Through these portfolios, the employer can assess how reflective the aspiring nurse educator has been and be in the apposition to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses beforehand. The identification of personal teaching philosophy in a portfolio displays how an effective educator the nurse can be. This is because contemporary nurses need a host of skills top among them being a personal reflection. According to Tawanwongsri & Phenwan (2019), reflection as a process of thinking not only explores but also determines the nurse educators’ thoughts and actions together with their underlying philosophies.(Portfolios from Prospective Nurse Educators) As a novice nurse educator, I consider that the duty of faculty is not to spew out facts only but to fundamentally train the student’s mind how to think. Suffice to say that in my opinion, the most significant responsibility of an educator towards this end is to nurture a trusting and friendly relationship with their students to accord the learners a chance to learn and widen their critical and creative thinking skills even as improve their nursing skills. The C.V. gives an executive summary version of the nurse educator and provides the busy employers the concrete facts of the applicant. At the same time, the tabled writings and publications attest to the educator’s commitment to nursing scholarly work (Billings & Halstead, 2016). A well-written portfolio, therefore, essentially captures the eight core competencies of a nurse educator as envisaged by NLN core competencies, which require a nurse educator to facilitate learning, be the facilitator of the learner development and socialization in addition to using varied assessment and evaluation techniques. Also included in these educator competencies are participation in curriculum design, being a change agent, and leader while continuously seeking the pursuit of quality improvements in the role of nurse educator. The last two of these competencies are engagement in scholarship and ability to function in an environment where political, socio-economic and cultural forces all impact on both the teaching and learning of nursing knowledge (Utley, 2012).(Portfolios from Prospective Nurse Educators) A healthcare facility that I would like to Work in Fukada (2018) describes nursing competency as comprising of three theories, namely behaviorism, trait theory, in addition to holism. There is the awareness that healthcare has significantly transformed as disease structure change and an elderly population that continues to increase even as birth rates continue to decrease. As such, any nurse educator would like to work in a facility that keeps pace with all these emerging issues and challenges. For me, this is captured by Top Notch University Teaching and Referral Medical Center (TNU&RMC), a hypothetical healthcare organization situated in an urban center in one of the U.S. Coastal states. Because academic portfolios can exist in several forms, I would for an electronic portfolio and create one through using the Papers manager software (Bhargaya et al., 2015). The main folder would then be subdivided subfolders where the clinical, teaching and research materials will be included. To apply for a nurse educator role in this facility, I would consist of the following in my portfolio. The opening paragraph would be my original statement that heralds my teaching philosophy, which is Training the mind to think beyond what the facts tell and a brief outline of how this is realized. The next section is where my work philosophy is expanded in detail. This section analyzes my teaching style and learning approaches informed by various teaching and learning theories and how to incorporate them. These will contain a brief overview of the social learning theory, adult learning theory, and the cognitive continuum theory without forgetting the Novice Expert model propagated by Benners. Social learning theory is included to stress the importance of role-playing, simulations, and clinical experiences to inspire the students to learn through observation and development of self-efficacy. Likewise, the Cognitive continuum theory is incorporated in my teaching style as it roots for active student involvement during lectures. Other things to include would be my detailed CV and carefully selected areas of my skills, like leadership and management. Other areas of expertise highlight my communications and computer skills, in addition to customer service proficiency. Finally would distribute the portfolio to potential employers through emails and also posting the same on my wall in social media and personal blogs.(Portfolios from Prospective Nurse Educators) As you continue, premiumacademicaffiates.com has the top and most qualified writers to help with any of your assignments.
