Despite the growing numbers of mental health professionals, there is a shortage of experienced mental health nurses in low-income neighborhoods and rural areas. Some minority populations face challenges in accessing mental healthcare. For this interview, I engaged a nurse in mental health practice who has selected to work in a healthcare program that purposes to have a multidisciplinary mental health promotion intervention led by nurses targeting American individual above the age of 21 with existing chronic illnesses in an acute care hospital diagnosed with clinical depression. Tell us about a healthcare program within your practice. What are the costs and projected outcomes of this program?
MNLMHPI program is mental healthcare intervention targeting to improve health outcomes for adult American patients diagnosed with MDD and having one or more comorbidity living in an acute care hospital. The implementation cost for this program is $30 000 with the average cost for every patient taking an average of $ 800 while the average number of patients attended in the period between September 2019 and March 2020 being 30 clients. This represents the biggest portion of the programs budget as $24 000 is consumed by this vote alone.. Other expenses outlined in the program’s financial plan for the same period are consultation fees for internal, CBT coaching and staff training on the program and the research assistant stipend which combined take the remaining $6 000.The program outcomes are to have decreased anxiety and depressive symptoms within 180 days of the implementation of the program. Improve the patients’ quality of life. - Who is your target population?
Adult American patients diagnosed with clinical depression and living in an acute care hospital are the target of this intervention. The subjects had to be aged 21 years and above, not receiving palliative care, and had been admitted in the facility for more than 7 days. The subjects also had one or more chronic illness or illnesses like cardiovascular disease, diabetes or cancer. - What is the role of the nurse in providing input for the design of this healthcare program?
The role of the registered nurse is to lead the MNLMHPI, which is multiple method design to determine the impact interaction of a nursing home care setting, implementation of a multidisciplinary nurse-led intervention, and outcomes. A pre-test- post-test model is used to evaluate this nurse-led intervention. Some of the roles to be played by the RN include offering care coordination and liaise with the multidisciplinary care team ranging from the nursing home care manager, the primary care physician as well as a home caregiver. My role as an advocate for the depressive American adult clients is to assess their needs while factoring in individual backgrounds like the level of awareness, personal values, and medical history. In this program, the nurses educate the patient, nursing home caregivers, the family caregiver on depression using audio-visual educational resources like posters and pamphlets. The nurse will also assess the patient’s ability in terms of the client’s strengths and weaknesses, then using problem-solving tests, come up with appropriate therapeutic measures in problem-solving. During the program design phase, these roles will mainly focus on identifying the theoretical framework to be used and its philosophical underpinnings. It will be supported by current mental health practices and also guide in determining the budget for it to suitable. In the implementation phase and the same roles, and the corresponding positions now transform into how to provide enough incentives to ensure the participants fully participate in the program. By using this team led by a group of registered nurses, the program will be able to detect, manage as well as decrease the severity of the depressive symptoms among American adults with comorbid chronic illnesses. The lead RN will offer intensive care management. Conclusion
In conclusion, I believe that considering the rising number of adults admitted in acute care hospitals, depression should be recognized as a severe health issue that needs intervention.
