ANALYZING GROUP TECHNIQUES
Group therapy can alleviate feelings of isolation and foster a supportive and collaborative environment for sharing difficult feelings in order to facilitate healing. Group Therapy Techniques were demonstrated in the video
Interpersonal group therapy technique was demonstrated in the video. Group members shared and interacted with others regarding issues they are struggling with individually. Others offered moral and material support to help in the process of healing. People battling with addiction often experience isolation, which they need to break out from by learning to develop connections and demonstrate positive interactions. In this video, one group member shares how he used to steal medications from his ailing mum. The others listened actively, trying to reflect on the situation with him, and some shared their relatable experiences to make the protagonist feel comfortable (Cats Cats, 2016). One of the group members shared a relatable experience of stealing pension money from his grandfather. The individual sharing his experience stealing medications from his mother believes that people would not respect or want to associate with him when they learn what he did. However, the therapist and other members interact positively with him, assuring that no one would judge him for what he did in the past and that it is okay to share what he is struggling with (Cats Cats, 2016). Opening up is breaking out of the isolation driven by his fears and insecurities that allowed his addiction to thrive. Jimmy says he wanted to share with the group members because he trusted them. Evidence from the Literature that Supports the Technique Demonstrated
Research shows interpersonal group therapy addresses mental health illnesses and substance abuse (Rajhans et al., 2020). Interpersonal therapy helps people learn how to communicate and build relationships with members of the group, vital skills for a successful, sustainable recovery and positive growth. Interpersonal group therapy is a powerful tool that allows individuals to learn about themselves and their relationships with others (Rajhans et al., 2020). The individuals sharing their experience believe that stealing from those close to them tainted their relationship with them. Interpersonal group therapy allows individuals to address relational issues that cause psychological distress or dissatisfaction in relationships with others (Cuijpers et al., 2018). This technique is effective for people struggling to communicate or share their thoughts, feelings, and needs directly with others. The stealing from those close to them makes the people in the video feel shame and guilt. Interpersonal therapy is effective in helping people mend such relational issues. What the therapist did well
The therapist’s main role in the video is facilitating communication and encouraging Jimmy to continue sharing his experience. The therapist kept the session going, allowing Jimmy to continue sharing and joining group members in empathizing with Jimmy’s situation, reassuring him that sharing his relational issues or stealing from his mum does not alter how they think about him (Cats Cats, 2016). Something I would have handled differently
As the video begins, the therapist asks Jimmy to go on in a manner I felt was pressuring. Jimmy is uncomfortable sharing his experience, particularly what he did that makes him feel ashamed and guilty. I would allow Jimmy some time after he stopped talking to catch some breath, gather his thoughts, and manage his emotions and feelings before asking him to continue. Although it is necessary to keep the conversation flowing, ensuring those sharing do not feel pressured to share their experiences is vital. Insights Gained from Watching the Therapist Handle the Group Therapy
The therapist handled the session well and allowed people to communicate in turns, offer support when necessary, and share their experiences to help Jimmy feel comfortable. The therapist also ensures that Jimmy gets the undivided attention of group members (Cats Cats, 2016). She has done well in developing a group based on trust that Jimmy feels comfortable sharing the most shameful did of his life. Leading my Group Session
Successful group therapy is based on meaningful interactions with others. People are willing to participate in a safe and constructive environment. Having a disruptive group member betrays the qualities of an effective group environment. The most important approach to dealing with a disruptive group member is setting rules and reviewing them with members to ensure they understand inappropriate conduct and that it will not be allowed. Building trust among the group members is also important to ensure everyone feels comfortable sharing (Finkle, 2017). Everyone should have equal opportunities to share. To get members to participate actively, I would allow them to engage at their own pace, utilize affirming, empathetic words and statements instead of probing questions, discuss with members the group process, and consistently communicate each group member’s responsibility to the group and the individuals. Every stage of group therapy has an outcome vital to successful group development. In the forming stage, I expect members to get to know each other in terms of names and issues they face. In the storming stage, I would expect conflict between group members due to the differences in personalities, beliefs, and expectations (Richard, 2020). In the norming stage, I anticipate members to get comfortable with one another, develop meaningful relationships, and interact constructively. In the performing stage, I expect people to begin addressing their issues and helping each other heal. Group therapy is an effective approach to addressing mental health issues, alcohol, and addiction. It brings people experiencing the same or comparable problems, making members feel comfortable and not alone. Group therapy gives people a sense of belonging because individuals are surrounded by others going through issues themselves. Individuals gain massively from the support network and can develop perspective by listening to and sharing with others (Wendt & Gone, 2018). However, speaking or sharing shameful experiences can be uncomfortable in front of a group. Personality clash often causes conflict, and members can feel a lack of confidentiality.
