Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students

Process of Self-Study

The process I will use to ensure I have the organizational support and data needed to complete the self-study required by the accrediting body. This will begin with an initial stakeholder meeting to ensure questions are answered as to the purpose of accreditation and to secure the support needed. The process requires the identification of areas of improvement needed, peer evaluation, and self-assessment. Program evaluation data needs to be collected regularly to support and drive an ongoing course of action to enhance quality improvements (Hanna et al., 2016). The nursing program will submit a self-study for peer review followed by a campus site visit. This document will demonstrate the program’s compliance with all criteria and policies. This includes a history of the program and what sets our program apart. Then annual reports will be submitted to demonstrate continued compliance with each of the required standards. This self-study will include the table of contents, an introduction to the programs offered, proper formatting, and tables that include the data needed to demonstrate how we meet each of the standards. This data will program outcomes.(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

Evaluate Leader role in Self-Study

My role as the leader in the self-study for re-accreditation includes identifying deficiencies and making corrections as needed. Identifying work groups to actively identify any gaps. As an intervention, I will connect the self-study to the program philosophy, principles, and values related to the program outcomes. Returning the program response to the site visit report to the accrediting agency by the requested date (Davis, 2018). Effectively describing and responding timely is an effective part of my role as a leader in the self-study. Accountability is an essential part of my role as a leader in self-study. This accountability includes an assessment of what is important and providing transparent information about students and institutional performance (Baer, 2017).(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

CLASSMATE 2

Explain the process you will use to ensure you have the data and organizational support to complete the self-study as required by the accrediting body.

The self-study begins by creating a team consisting of the above members at a minimum. Within that team, a process for project completion and an overall timeline must be designed after reviewing the criteria together and determining if all the appropriate departments and team members were included. During the timeline phase, the team must keep the application cycle rotation in mind to ensure they meet the deadline(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students).  This team then creates tasks by reading the criteria, delineating duties for completion with appropriate timelines, and frequent meetings to ensure that tasks are completed on time and appropriately addressed. They are additionally focusing on providing that the proper team members are in an appropriate role and included for writing each domain as a subject-matter expert for that specific criterion. (Fuselier et al., 2019)(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

Describe and evaluate your role as the leader of this self-study.

The DNP’s role in facilitating the self-study is the main organizer of the project. The educational and interdisciplinary skills of the DNP prepare them for this role. Creating a timeline and ensuring task completion is the focus of the DNP, to ensure that the project will be completed timely. DNP-prepared nurses are experts in the complexities of practice and in improving patient outcomes. (AACN, 2021) DNP leaders are educated in balancing quality of care with productivity and conceptualize new delivery models for improved care of patients (AACN, 2021)(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

Hi class,

As with internal dissemination efforts, communicating project findings to external stakeholders is crucial for bridging the research-practice gap. This process may take different forms, depending on the project type, audience, and researcher preference (Ross-Hellauer et al., 2020). For my proposed Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) project, my dissemination strategy for external stakeholders would include three channels: open access (OA) repositories, professional workshops or seminars, and issue briefs.(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

The first method that would inform my external dissemination plan is the OA repository. OA repositories are digital collections of archived research materials administered mainly by institutional libraries, faculty, or government agencies, allowing audiences to download the works from a central location. These platforms include the Digital Commons and the Sigma Repository. OA repositories have become a preferred method of disseminating DNP projects nationally and internationally because of their promptness, cost-effectiveness, and ease of access. Such factors eliminate the need for costly subscription packages at traditional research databases, allowing quality improvement initiatives to move more quickly (Kesten & Hoover, 2022). Thus, an OA repository would be a desirable channel for disseminating my DNP project.(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

Professional workshops and seminars constitute another suitable dissemination channel for reaching external stakeholders. Workshops and seminars may take several formats, including in-person meetings, short webinars, and train-the-trainer frameworks. The method shows promise because it builds on adult learning principles and is compatible with social media. A best practice for utilizing this method to publicize evidence is to seek endorsements from target professional groups before organizing the workshops/seminars (Brownson et al., 2018). Therefore, workshops and seminars could offer a suitable platform to publicize the evidence.(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

The third method that I might use to disseminate my findings externally is publishing issue briefs. Issue briefs are short versions of research projects used to prompt specific behaviors or actions among the target audience by outlining the problem and its solution. This capability renders them useful for imploring policymakers to implement broader changes to address practice issues. Several data visualization techniques for designing issue briefs exist, including infographics, graphs, and tables. A best practice for creating issue briefs is to keep them concise, professional, appealing, and to the point. Briefs should also be persuasive to accomplish their goals (Brownson et al., 2018). Hence, preparing issue briefs is another technique I could use to publish my DNP project externally.(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

Overall, the three channels align with my proposed DNP practice change project, which seeks to reduce body weight among obese and overweight adults using the Five A’s counseling framework. Firstly, OA repositories such as the Sigma Repository have specific subcollections tailored to adult obesity and related topics. Scholars and professionals interested in the topic can easily submit or locate obesity-related materials in these digital collections. This feature could enhance the potential reach of my completed DNP project. Secondly, based on my preliminary assessment, many obesity-related professional organizations, most notably The Obesity Society, Obesity Action Coalition, and The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, offer workshops and seminars where one can connect with leaders and healthcare providers in the obesity field. Hence, it is possible to use these platforms to connect with potential audiences for my DNP project. Thirdly, since obesity is a significant public health concern that warrants policy interventions, issue briefs are necessary to draw policymakers’ attention to the matter and its potential solutions. Their brevity and persuasiveness could allow me to pitch my proposed intervention to policymakers if the findings demonstrate that it is effective.(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

CLASSAMATE 4

Each DNP student completes their project and presents the findings to the practicum site, although few disseminate the results to others upon completion of their program and graduation. Conclusions of the evidence-based project can be disseminated using many venues, such as poster presentations, podiums, and virtual presentations (Arends and Callies, 2022). Outside of my practicum sight, I would submit either a poster or podium presentation at the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSN) annual conference. Each year, AMSN issues a call for abstracts and posters to be considered for the next conference, which is held in person and virtually. Enhanced discharge processes are needed in hospitals across the country as hospitals continue to house patients with no acute medical need due to limited skilled beds for patient transfers or available family to provide care for the patient at home.  Collaboration with your project preceptor to disseminate the information is an effective method. The AMSN requires that all posters and presentations be evidence-based to be included in the schedule.(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)

Often students feel that they lack competence and confidence, which hinders their willingness to disseminate the learnings from their DNP project. On the contrary, students willing to share their projects build confidence and competence and disseminate knowledge learned. Sharing my project at the AMSN convention reaches nurses from across the country that all work in some capacity within the medical-surgical arena. Timely hospital discharges, patient flow, and decreasing readmission rates to the hospital are something that many hospitals are focusing on. If my project is disseminated and implemented, valuable time and resources could be reallocated to other areas of need.(Using a Systematic Evaluation Plan to Develop a Self-Study for Nursing Students)
