Hi #Name,

Your selection of the Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community as a minority health population comprising cross-cultural members underscores the importance of cultural values to this community. Estimates put the LGBTQ community in the US to be anywhere between 3% and 9% of the US population who encounter societal stressors across healthcare settings by dint of the social preferences (Boroughs et al., 2015). Cultural competence equips one to have the requisite understanding of the cultural influences that impact a healthcare provider’s ability to offer care to patients from diverse cultural groups and who, in this context, meet other health disparities because of their sexual preferences. Even in the US itself, some states like Arizona passed legislation where business owners imply that even those in the healthcare industry could cite religious beliefs to justify why same-sex couples were denying services (Mallory et al., 2018).

Healthcare experts acknowledge that LGBTQ members are humans who may experience denial of care, harsh language, and increased incidences of mental health due to this community’s alienation and stigmatization based on sexual preferences. In mental health interventions like psychotherapy, cultural issues consideration would indeed help the LGBTQ population resolve their challenges. Roland & Burlew (2017) mention these challenges to include but are not limited to the inability to discuss sexual health-related issues and lower the prevalence of mental health illnesses.

Hey #Name,

Your post on Black Americans’ cultural issues was informative and interesting as it concisely captured the key stressors, namely racism, prejudice, and economic disparities. Therefore, it should be no surprise that African Americans face a higher incidence of mental health issues than the rest of ethnic communities, even minority ones (Williams (2018).

Subsequently, identifying values cultural issues faced by African Americans would help identify the community’s needs leading to more knowledge on cultural competency amongst healthcare providers. Similarly, multifactorial discrimination among ethnic minorities should be resolved as it is the basic cause of mental healthcare disparities by paying closer attention to impacts o of social marginalization on health (Chen et al., 2015). Researchers and clinical psychologists should conduct further studies on addressing cultural-based issues that make the African American individual living below the poverty line have a double chance of experiencing psychological distress. Other measures should devise strategies to lower the cost of psychotherapy to make it affordable to individuals who need it most.
