Comprehensive Study Plan for Nursing Students

Comprehensive Study Plan for Nursing Students

At the beginning of the practicum, I set to improve my competence in certain areas at the end of the practicum. I can assert that I am most confident in implementing and interpreting comprehensive mental health evaluations and relevant physical examinations. Ball et al. (2021) present a physical examination and mental health evaluations as primary elements of the mental health treatment continuum. Thus, achieving a mental health assessment and physical examination milestone is crucial for my future practice as a mental health nurse. Moreover, I am most confident in identifying relevant evidence-based psychotherapeutic guidelines for clinical practice by ascertaining the associated risks and benefits to the patient, identifying appropriate modality for the patient, incorporating patient preferences and developmental consents, patient’s financial capability, providing informed consent, and managing presenting symptoms.(Comprehensive Study Plan for Nursing Students)

However, there are opportunities for growth since I am considerably still at the beginning level when identifying relevant evidence-based practice guidelines for effective medical planning. This concerns the associated benefits and risks, patient needs, financial capability, ethical concerns, and management of presenting symptoms. According to Curtis et al. (2017), evidence-based practice is at the center of mental health practice considering the primary role it plays n promoting better health outcomes among patients. Moreover, I am equally at the beginning level in my capacity to demonstrate an appropriate selection of correct screening tools based on clinical situations. Screening instruments are vital in providing crucial data on a patient’s illness to support diagnosis and treatment planning (Boland & Verduin, 2021).(Comprehensive Study Plan for Nursing Students)

Based on my current competency, I plan to continue pursuing the goals I identified in the last quarter that I did not achieve and those identified as crucial. The first goal is to achieve competence in identifying relevant evidence-based practice guidelines for effective medical planning. I will intensify my interactions with the preceptor and other healthcare personnel at the practicum site, i.e., increase my consultative interactions from once to twice a week. I also plan to deepen my reviews of existing clinical guidelines from the university website and at the practicum site. Specifically, I intend the current one to two hours a day for two days reviewing and mastering the evidence-based clinical guidelines.(Comprehensive Study Plan for Nursing Students)

The second goal is to enhance my capability to demonstrate an appropriate selection of correct screening tools and instruments in clinical circumstances. I plan to intensify my evaluation of the practicum resources related to the screening tool, consulting with my preceptor and other experience nurses, and intensity my engagement in various clinical assessments. I plan to engage in at least 40 clinical assessments this quarter. I also plan to spend two hours two days a week reviewing existing resources at the practicum site and university library on mental health screening tools.

Lastly, I look forward to being competent in efficiently and effectively implementing screening instruments with the clients and accurately interpreting results for screening instruments. For this goal, I plan to consistently identify new screening tools and their relevance for target groups, compare validity and reliability among the screening tools, and effectiveness for different target populations. I also plan to consult experienced nurses and collaborate in at least 40 clinical assessments. At the end of every week, I will reflect on my pursuit of competence by noting weekly interactions for various clinical areas where I need competence and determining which areas are not well-covered during the week. Depending on the outcome of the self-reflection, I intend to review the goals and target activities to achieve the desired outcome at the end of the quarter.(Comprehensive Study Plan for Nursing Students)

Various resources are available to achieve these goals. These include my preceptor and other experienced nurse practitioners at the practicum site. I will form and join student groups at the practicum site and among student nurses within my specialty to discuss and get insights into various nursing competencies. Moreover, I will use mnemonics to help identify and master different screening instruments and multiple uses. The university library and reputable website will be crucial in developing my competency in the identified areas. Lastly, self-evaluation will be critical to appraising my progress and modifying my target actions to ensure I achieve the goals at the end of the quarter.(Comprehensive Study Plan for Nursing Students)
